Within Scott county are quite a number of native born Englishmen. They are good citizens and, with a possible exception of two or three, are thrifty, prosperous people. One such is John Hepworth, who lives about a mile and a half south of Alsey. He was born in Yorkshire, England, May 22, 1857. He grew up much the same as other lads and received his education at the parish schools. On January 7, 1878, he was married at the parish church in Sheffied, England. Mrs. Hepworth was born in Yorkshire, England, March 18, 1855. They have six children four sons and two daughters - William, Benjamin Franklin, John, Joshua, Mary Ann and Tessie Marie. The children were all born in the United States with the Exception of William, who was a babe in his mother's arms when the family came to this country November 19,1879.
After coming to this county Mr. Hepworth settled upon the farm where he now lives, near Alsey, and has found that neighborhood in Scott county a congenial place and the people neighborly and friendly. Nearly twenty-four years he has lived there, and year after year has worked hard, constantly adding a little to his accumulation and is today one of the solid men of the south end of the county. After coming here he took the oath of allegiance; is a Master Mason, a democrat, and one of the loyal sons of Scott county.
