J. A. HILDERBRAND

One of the nicest, neatest little restaurants in Scott county is located at Bluffs and is conducted by J. A. Hilderbrand. The proof of this is taking a meal at his place. Mr. Hilderbrand is of German parentage, on the father's side, and was born at Exeter, Illinois, July 21, 1867. His father, Joseph A. Hilderbrand, was born in Baden, Germany, in 1850, and in 1864 came to New York, and from there came almost directly to Scott county, Illinois, and settled at Exeter, where he engaged in farming. His mother, Caroline C. Hiteman, was the daughter of John and Margaret (Shoney) Hiteman and was born at Exeter in 1846. Joseph A. Hilderbrand and Caroline C. Hiteman were married, July 20, 1864, and became the parents of eight children.

J. A. Hilderbrand grew up on the farm near Exeter and received his education at Brush College, and when he attained his majority, left home and went to Bluffs. February 8, 1896. J. A. Hilderbrand and Miss Ella L. Chance, daughter of William and Mary L. (Osborn) Chance, were married. Mrs. Hilderbrand is a native of Missouri and was born at St. Louis. To them two children have been born, but both have died, and thus has the happiness of their young lives been marred and their home robbed of the light and life for which they had hoped.

Mr. Hilderbrand is recognized as one of the good business men of Bluffs and is found more than willing, and ever ready, to further the interests, and protect the good name, an honor to any community and may be depended upon, early and late, to stand for all that is essential in community growth and development.
