CHARLES B. HUBBARD

The senior member of one of the leading financial institutions in this part of Illinois, Charles B. Hubbard, is a son of Joseph and Rowena (Taylor) Hubbard, and was born in Buckland, Massachusetts, September 25, 1841. He enjoyed the simple educational advantages afforded by the district schools of his native town, which were supplemented with an academic course. When he was eighteen years of age he was appointed clerk in the bank at Shilburne Falls, Massachusetts, where he remained until he enlisted in the 52d regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, and served under General Banks, through the campaign ending in the capture of Port Hudson. After his discharge from the army he secured a position with William Jessop & Sons, New York.

Mr. Hubbard came to Winchester in 1864, and has since that time been engaged in the banking business here. He was first a member of the firm of E. G. Miner & Co.; then he was cashier of the first national bank until November, 1867, when, in company with E. G. Miner and Robert Frost, he organized the banking firm of Miner, Frost & Hubbard. Upon the retirement of Mr. Miner and the death of Mr. Frost, he became the senior member of the present firm of Frost & Hubbard. The banking house of Frost & Hubbard is the logical outgrowth of the old firm of Miner, Frost & Hubbard. The firm is at Present composed of Charles R. Frost, Robert William Frost, John Watson Frost, Edward J. Frost and Charles B. Hubbard. The capital stock is $50,000 and in addition there is a handsome undivided surplus. The clientele of the bank embraces the leading business men, stockmen and farmers of the county and they manifest their confidence in its soundness by their very liberal patronage.

May 22, 1866, Mr. Hubbard was married to Miss Anna Miner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Miner of Winchester. Five children have graced their home - Fred A., who married Miss Jessie Turner of Malvern, Arkansas, in August, 1894 and died February 27, 1897, leaving a wife and one son, Gordon Hubbard (born April 24, 1996); Lucy M., who was married to Allyn T. Watson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, December 27, 1900; Anna Mildred, Winifred C. and John Russell are the children remaining at home. Mrs. Hubbard died February 1, 1901.

As a business man Mr. Hubbard is prudent and conservative, and as a financier ranks with the shrewdest of them. He enjoys an extensive acquaintance and his business and social relations in this community have always been of the most pleasant character.
