Engaged in the manufacture of high grade cigars, David H. Lewis is building for himself a competency and a good business in Winchester. He is a son of Isaac H. and Mary A. (Welch) Lewis, and was born at Winchester, August 4, 1873. Isaac H. Lewis (father of David H. Lewis) was a son of Isaac H. and Mary Lewis, and was born December 29, 1841. Mary A. Welch is the daughter of Solomon and Sarah Welch and was born June 27, 1843. She was married to Isaac H. Lewis, November 11, 1866.
David H. Lewis was reared at Winchester and was educuted in the schools of that city. He served his apprenticeship and learned the cigar maker's trade in the factory of Stephen Arleth, and in April, 1894, formed a partnership with Joseph A. Valentine and opened up a business in Winchester. This partnership continued until February, 1901, when Mr. Valentine's interest was sold to F. R. Waters, and now the firm name is Lewis & Waters.
At Jacksonville, Illinois, October 18, 1899, David H. Lewis was married to Miss Nettie R. Bentler. She is a daughter of Clemense and Mary E. (Hammer) Bentler. Her father, Clemense Bentler, was born at Poderborn, Germany. Her mother, Mary E. Hammer, was born at Stuttgart, Germany in 1841, and was married to Clemense Bentler in 1860.
Mr. Lewis has twice served the people of Winchester as city clerk and discharged his duties faithfully. He owns a nice home which he completed about July 1, 1901. He is a hustling sort of a fellow and is recognized as one of the leading cigar manufacturers in this part of Illinois.
