One of the best known men in Scott county is William Milhous. Since 1869 he has been a resident of Winchester and his life in that city has been such as to throw him into personal contact with nearly every man, woman and child in the county. Mr. Milhous was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, March 10, 1939, and when three years old went with his parents to Mt. Union (now Alliance) county, that state, where he attended the public schools and the Mt. Union college until he was seventeen years of age. The family then moved to Du Point, Jefferson county, Indiana, and he lived there one year. At the age of eighteen he secured a position as clerk in a store at Franklin, a small town, near Indianapolis, where he remained three years.
His first business venture was in 1860 when he opened a general store at Hartsville, Indiana, which business he conducted until 1863. He then moved back to Salem, Ohio, and was in the shoe business there for six years. He then came to Scott county, Illinois, and opened a general store in Winchester in the spring of 1869. Fifteen years he was engaged in this business there, and being naturally a shrewd business man he accumulated considerable property and was reckoned a well-to-do man when he quit merchandising in 1884. Since then he has given his time to real estate matters and his duties as president of the Winchester Electric Light Co. In everything pertaining to the public welfare he is progressive and wields an influence decidedly good in the community.
In 1862, October 15, Mr. Milhous and Miss Frances A. Davidson were married. She was an accomplished and refined young lady of Martinsville, Indiana, and her companionship has proven a guidance through his every walk in life. She is an estimable lady, and , with her husband, is spending her life in one of the pleasant delightful homes of Scott county.
