Seven miles west of Winchester, on the 23rd day of March, 1846, William J. Moore was born. He is a son of William and Hulda (Hunnecut) Moore. When William J. was but eight months old his father died and when he was seven years old his mother and the family moved to Dallas county, Texas. When he was eleven years old the family returned to the old Scott county homestead near Bloomfield. Mr. Moore's boyhood days were spent upon the old farm and until he was seventeen years of age he attended school at Bloomfield. After this he attended the Winchester high school.
May 18, 1865, he was married to Miss Lucinda Slagle, youngest daughter of Peter and Sarah Slagle. To them eleven children have been born - all are living. They are: Belle, George W., James I., Sadie, Charles S., Emma J., John C., Hulda E., Hattie L., William J. Jr., and Tony C.
For the first four years after his marriage Mr. and Mrs. Moore lived with his widowed mother at Bloomfield. Following this he moved to Macoupin county, Illinois, and bought a farm one-half mile east of Palmyra. Six years he lived there, then sold out an came back to Scott county and purchased the Peter Slagle farm, five miles northwest of Winchester, where he resides today. Mr. Moore is not a member of any religious denomination, but his faithful wife is a communicant in the Primitive Baptist church, which privilege she has enjoyed for a number of years.
It goes without saying that Mr. Moore is a democrat, and from time almost out of mind he has been school director. He is a splendid citizen; kind to his family, respectful to his neighbors and obliging to the community at large.
