GARLAND OVERTON

Descended from a good old Kentucky family Garland Overton was born in Scott county, Illinois, June 24, 1856. He is the first son in a family of three children - two of whom are still living. Until he was twenty-three years of age Mr. Overton worked upon his father's farm, near Winchester. He secured a good common school education and fitted himself for an active, useful life.

March 15, 1877, he was married to Miss Adella C. Coultas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Coultas, a native of Yorkshire, England. Mr. Coultas was one of Scott county's sturdy pioneers and now at the age of eighty-nine is still hale and hearty. He was born October 20, 1814, near Pickering, Yorkshire, England. He emigrated with the family to America in 1830 and settled at his present location in Scott county nearly seventy-three years ago. He has fourteen living children, seven of whom were present at a birthday dinner tendered him by Mr. and Mrs. Garland Overton at their home, October 19, 1902. He is one of the truly interesting characters of the county and a gentleman of decidedly strong convictions.

Mr. and Mrs. Overton have been the parents of five children, three of whom are still living. In 1883 he moved to Winchester, where he remained for ten years, and then moved to Uncle John Coultas' farm at Riggston, where he now resides. Pleasant of manner, accommodating in disposition, he daily goes about his duties happy in the thought that he lives in the best county and numbers his friends among the best people on earth.
