DAN T. SMITH.

This gentleman is prominent in insurance circles. He is a son of Philip W. and Emma E. Smith, an was born at Lebanon, Pennsylvania, September 8, 1869. His parents moved to Illinois and settled at Minier when Dan T. was but a mere lad. He was educated in that town and learned the barber's trade. In the fall (September), 1891, he came to Winchester and worked a while for George Dodson and then formed a partnership with Charles N. Mader. He was also engaged in other lines, and sold bicycles and bicycle repairs, having formed a partnership with the late Fred A. Hubbard, under the firm name of Smith & Hubbard. In 1893 the firm of Smith & Hubbard engaged in the insurance line and did a thriving business until Mr. Hubbard's death, in February, 1897. Since that time Mr. Smith as conducted the business for himself. For years he was the Winchester correspondent of the Scott County Arrow.

In November, 1896, he was the democratic candidate for coroner of Scott county and wad elected by a good majority. December 6, 1894, he was married to Miss Flora Rankin, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Rankin. They have one daughter, Syble. Dan T. Smith is a hustling young business man, upright and honorable in all his dealings, and is at present devoting his whole time to the insurance business. He has a good position as inspector and special agent of the Continental Fire Insurance Company of New York and his territory comprises the state of Illinois. He also conducts a general insurance business, with office in the Frost & Hubbard bank building, Winchester, which is supervised over by Mrs. Smith during his absence from home. Mr. Smith thoroughly understands his business, and bids fair to rise to a position of prominence in the insurance world.
