GEORGE M. STUART

On the farm in Scott county, Illinois, now owned by John H. King, three miles south of Winchester, George M. Stuart was born, August 24, 1860, and reared. He was educated at Alsey and put in a good many years faithful work upon the farm. His father, Charles Stuart, was born November 19, 1819, at Crab Apple Orchard, Kentucky, and came with his parents to this (then Morgan) county, settling about one and a half miles from the present site of Alsey in 1829. His mother, Ann (Blackburn) Stuart, is a native of England; was born in April, 1830, and came with her parents, when she was ten years of age, to the United States and settled at Kewanee, Illinois. There she remained until her marriage to Charles Stuart in 1847. He died July 20, 1885, aged sixty-five years, eight months and one day, and Mrs. Stuart is now living at her home in Alsey.

In 1892 George M. Stuart moved into Winchester and purchased a half interest in the implement business of D. C. Leib. He was in partnership with him for one year, and then sold out and bought the meat market of Ellis & Spears, located on the south side of the square, conducted it until October 12, 1901, when he sold out to James Andell. Mr. Stuart is now engaged in the business of buying and shipping live stock. Before he moved to Winchester he was engaged in farming 100 acres of land near Coal Hollow, which place he farmed for ten years to a day.

September 30, 1885, Mr. Stuart and Miss Kate Y. Peak, youngest daughter of Jacob R. and Mary (Young) Peak, were married. Mrs. Stuart was born November 25, 1869. To them five children have been born - three daughters and two sons. Their names in the order of their birth, are: Stella S., Morgan R., Allyn P., Lynn Y. and Mary Julia.

In politics Mr. Stuart is a republican and has served two or three times as a member of the city council. He is a progressive gentleman and a Master Mason. He is an excellent citizen and never balks at trifles.
