The present principal of the Glasgow public school is R. L. Winans. He is a son of Aaron and Mary (Provine) Winans and was born at Albany, Whiteside county, Illinois, January 4, 1877. His father, Aaron Winans, was a native of New York state, and came to Illinois many years ago. His mother, Mary (Provine) Winans, was a daughter of William and Paulina (Scott) Provine, and was born in Fulton county, Illinois. Our subject was reared in Whiteside and Fulton counties and was educated at Vermont, Illinois. Mr. Winans received a good education and has taken up the calling of pedagogy. In 1899, March 12, at Alsey, Illinois, Mr. Winans was married to Miss Elsie Verona Day, daughter of Lewis and Henrietta (Thom) Day. Two children - Virgil Winans, aged two and one half years; and Everett Winans, aged three months - were born to them. Mrs. Winans died at Glasgow, Illinois, December 29, 1902.
Mr. Winans is quite popular in that part of Scott county in which he resides and is recognized as a young man of ability, well qualified in every way for the discharge of the duties attendant upon the high calling which he has chosen for his life work.
