ROBERT GILMER GAMBREL

Note from Jason: The photo above is of my grandfather, Robert Gilmer Gambrel, taken in Springfield in 1913. He is the one standing on the left. I am hoping to identify the man (sitting) on the right. I am not sure what the uniforms are, it looks like the hats say "173" and "89".

Robert Gilmber Gambrel was born in Irish Grove in 1887 and grew up there and in Greenview Precinct. He joined the Marines in 1904 and was a Marine until 1926 (his military record shows a gap in enlistment from 1913-1916, and he was gassed in France during WWI. My father told me he had some facial scaring as a result. By 1926 he was living in Chicago and was a conductor for the IC Railroad until 1948, so I believe the hats may be some type of railroad caps or possibly Marine hats? I would be very interested inf anyone knows anything about the Gambrels in Menard or Logan County. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.
