Monroe County Veterans Book
The Monroe County Genealogical
Society thanks everyone who submitted biographies, ordered books
and contributed as sponsors for the Monroe
County Veterans Book Project. Due to overwhelming response, the
publisher has requested an extension of time to coordinate the
publishing process. As a result, the Society will be able to accept
additional biographies, book orders and sponsorships until our FINAL
DEADLINE EXTENSION of SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2007. This is a
reminder that the cost of the book is $40 plus $2.50
sales tax. Order forms are still available at Columbia
& Waterloo Libraries.

RESEARCH TRIP
Last week we (Jan Wenk, Pat Vaseska and I) visited the MO History Library in Clayton. I didn't expect to find much because all of my early American ancestors were Virginians/NC/Mass. who came to Monroe Co, IL for their military bounty lands after the Revolutionary War.. However, I discovered that this is not so. I made several great obituary finds in the index cards for The Missouri Republican newspaper (for James Lemen Jr. & Joseph Hilton). The reason this is such a great find is that I had despaired of ever finding the Hilton obit because there are absolutely no surviving Waterloo newspapers for the time period in which he died. I've checked everywhere, even Springfield newspaper archives, and no luck. There is an approx.10 year void covering the time period (mid to late 1870's to early 1880s) when a lot of 2nd generation Rev. War Americans were dying. You can search these index cards online by visiting
http://www.mohistory.org/genealogy and choosing a surname search. |
