December 4, 1925

Shortly after midnight on Monday morning the death messenger knocked at the Leaf River home of Edward F. Bressler and answering his last roll call, he passed into the Great Beyond. In the death of Mr. Bressler, Leaf River loses one of her early settlers, a good man and worthy citizen.

Edward Franklin Bressler, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bressler, was born in Dauphin County, Penn., on February 18, 1838, and departed this life at Leaf River on November 30, 1925, aged 87 years, 9 months, and 11 days. He answered the call to arms early in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. C, 101st Ohio Inf., on August 6, 1862. He served until the end of the war and was with the Army of the Potomac at Lee's surrender. He saw much hard fighting and was wounded several times. At least one of these wounds was so serious that he was not expected to recover. He was discharged from the army at Camp Harker, Tenn. in June 1865.

He was a man of strong convictions and in early life became a member of the United Brethren Church. At the time of the split in the church, he went with the Liberal branch. Mr. Bressler had lived in Leaf River since early in its history, soon after the war. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catharine Bressler, three sons; Charles W. of Elk River, Minn, Martin E. of Rockford, and H. H. of Loves Park, and a daughter, Mrs. H. M. Reber of near Winnebago. He also leaves 24 grandchildren, 4 great granchildren, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the Leaf River Christian Church. Rev. R. W. Pittman had charge of the service, while Mrs. Harley Garner and Mrs. Roy Stukenberg sang several so beautiful pieces accompanied by Mrs. E. L. Peterson at the piano. A number of the comrades of G. L. Nevious Post, Rockford, and local members of the GAR attended the funeral, and took part in it, both at the church and at the cemetery. He was laid to rest in the beautiful Lightsville Cemetery, as taps were sounded. His pallbearers were his six grandsons, Charles Bressler, Ralph Bressler of Milwaukee, Terral Nressler of Rockford, Hallie and Herbert Reber of Rockford, and Donald Reber of Winnebago.
