Meetings & Programs

Meetings in 2012 will be held quarterly (March, June, September, and December) on the first Tuesday of those months at 7:00 p.m. at the Piatt County Offices Building (next to the Piatt County Nursing Home). A greeter will direct you to the room where the meeting will take place. Programs are normally presented at the meetings on topics of interest pertaining to history and genealogy. The public is welcome and parking is free.

2012

March:

6th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Monticello Township Cemetery: Then and Now - presented by Chris Cravens

Please join us in learning about the history of the Monticello Township Cemetery.

June: 

5th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- How Railroads Brought Standard Time to America - presented by Robert Doyle

Mr. Doyle will present a slideshow that follows the development of Railroad and Standard time in this country. In the late 1800’s as train traffic increased, railroads needed to have a standard time for the safe movement of trains. Mr. Doyle will discuss train crashes, Indiana's 20-plus local time zones, railroad watches and much more.

September:

4th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- To be announced

December: 

4th -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Special Program: To be announced. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Meat will be provided.

 

 

2011

March:

1st -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Miniature Horse Collection (1940s & 50s) - presented by Alice Boylan and Brad Knisely

A history of the collection will be presented along with a few figurines.

June: 

Sun 5th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Potluck Picnic and History of Suhre House - presented by Maynard Suhre

Please join us for a special Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, June 5th, 4 PM, at 618 E Washington Street, Monticello, IL. Maynard and Marion Suhre have graciously invited everyone to their home for a potluck picnic. Mr. Suhre will be presenting a history about the property and the homes previous owners.

September:

6th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Lincoln and the Civil War - presented by Dan Guillory

Please join us at the Allerton Public Library for our Quarterly Program Meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 7pm. Dan Guillory, author and retired Millikin University professor, will speak about Lincoln and the Civil War. Guillory is the author of "People and Places in The Land of Lincoln" and has many stories to share with us.

December: 

6th -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Special Program: Making of a hero: People in history who were labeled as hero's (or should have been) - presented by Gene Schnierle. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Meat will be provided.

 

 

2010

April:

6th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The Rosetta Stone: The Key to Egyptian Hieroglyphs - presented by Dr. Leonard Rumery

Dr. Rumery will discuss the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in the early 19th century; the application of the Stone’s inscriptions to the problem of the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs; and the basic principles of the hieroglyphic writing of the Middle Egyptian language, with examples of inscriptions on objects dating from circa 2800 B.C. to circa 100 B.C.

May: 

4th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The History of Central Illinois Manufacturing Company of Bement - presented by James Ayers

James Ayers of Monticello, born and raised in Bement and President since 1995 will present his family's contribution to the area.

June: 

1st -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- A Collection of American Flags - presented by Lee Scofield

July: 

6th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The Hindenburg - presented by Hugh Finson

August:  no meeting this month

September: 

**11th** -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- Tour of Bryant Home and Bryant Cottage (note special date & time) - presented by Marilyn Ayers and Pat Hunter

This program will be presented at 2:00 P.M. in and about the two Historical sites of Bryant Cottage and the Bryant Home, nearby.

Bring lawn chairs for an afternoon of history, tours and lawn party.

October: 

5th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- Robert Allerton: The Private Man and the Public Gifts - presented by Martha Burgin and Maureen Holtz

November: 

2nd -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Special Program about the Stoddard Family in Piatt County - presented by Paul Stoddard.

December: 

7th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- Tombstone Rubbings - presented by Ron Nolte
