Meetings & Programs

Meetings in 2014 will be held quarterly (March, June, September, and December) on the first Tuesday of those months at 7:00 p.m. with locations to be announced for each meeting. Programs are normally presented at the meetings on topics of interest pertaining to history and genealogy. Members, as well as the general public, are encouraged to attend the meetings.

Learn about other cities and towns around the United States named Monticello. Come and share your early memories of our Monticello!

Please Note - This meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at the Villas of Holly Brook at 901 Medical Center Dr, Monticello, IL (by the NEW Kirby Hospital).

April 2nd -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Old Monticello Cemetery - presented by Cochran Keating

Please join us in learning about the history of the Old Monticello Cemetery.

June: 

4th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Dighton Family History - presented by Melissa Dighton

Melissa Dighton will speak about the Dighton Family History highlighting her story with images of many of the Dighton family homes around Monticello, IL.

Please Note - This meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, IL.

September:

3rd -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- For the Love of Cemeteries - presented by Angie Johnson

Please join us for a SPECIAL Quarterly Meeting in Atwood, IL at the United Church of Atwood, located at 210 N. Main Street, Atwood, IL, at 7 pm. Angie Johnson of Bement and formerly of Atwood, will speak about her local cemetery restoration efforts, cemetery travels throughout Illinois, her involvement with the Illinois Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies, and information on other programs our state has to offer regarding cemeteries. Johnson writes about her cemetery travels in her column “Central Illinois Cemeteries Revised” in the Southern Piatt - Record Herald. Refreshments will be provided. For questions about this special meeting, please call or email the Historical Society.

December: 

3rd -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Program: “Gettysburg Rewind” 150th Anniversary of Gettysburg - presented by Gene Schnierle. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Meat will be provided.

 

 

2012

March:

6th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Monticello Township Cemetery: Then and Now - presented by Chris Cravens

Please join us in learning about the history of the Monticello Township Cemetery.

June: 

5th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- How Railroads Brought "Standard Time" to America - presented by Rob Doyle

Mr. Doyle is a retired Physical Education professor from Eastern Illinois University (EIU) and a volunteer at the Monticello Railway Museum.

September:

15th -- Special Program -- In Their Own Words - written by Linda Record

In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of Monticello, enjoy a virtual walk among the gravestones of the Monticello Township Cemetery in the NEW Phoenix Theatre. Hear stories of the early days of Monticello from the founders, early settlers, mayors, and other fascinating citizens. View their gravestones, portraits, homes and more as the actors take you back in time with their portrayal of each citizen. There are 2 performace times, 10 AM and 2 PM on Saturday. FYI - There will be no quarterly meeting in regards to minutes being read or status reports from our committees. If anyone would like to know about the current status of anything going on at the Society please feel free to contact us and we will gladly answer your questions.

1st -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Miniature Horse Collection (1940s & 50s) - presented by Alice Boylan and Brad Knisely

A history of the collection will be presented along with a few figurines.

June: 

Sun 5th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Potluck Picnic and History of Suhre House - presented by Maynard Suhre

Please join us for a special Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, June 5th, 4 PM, at 618 E Washington Street, Monticello, IL. Maynard and Marion Suhre have graciously invited everyone to their home for a potluck picnic. Mr. Suhre will be presenting a history about the property and the homes previous owners.

September:

6th -- Quarterly Meeting and Program -- Lincoln and the Civil War - presented by Dan Guillory

Please join us at the Allerton Public Library for our Quarterly Program Meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 7pm. Dan Guillory, author and retired Millikin University professor, will speak about Lincoln and the Civil War. Guillory is the author of "People and Places in The Land of Lincoln" and has many stories to share with us.

December: 

6th -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Special Program: Making of a hero: People in history who were labeled as hero's (or should have been) - presented by Gene Schnierle. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Meat will be provided.

 

 

2010

April:

6th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The Rosetta Stone: The Key to Egyptian Hieroglyphs - presented by Dr. Leonard Rumery

Dr. Rumery will discuss the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in the early 19th century; the application of the Stone’s inscriptions to the problem of the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs; and the basic principles of the hieroglyphic writing of the Middle Egyptian language, with examples of inscriptions on objects dating from circa 2800 B.C. to circa 100 B.C.

May: 

4th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The History of Central Illinois Manufacturing Company of Bement - presented by James Ayers

James Ayers of Monticello, born and raised in Bement and President since 1995 will present his family's contribution to the area.

June: 

1st -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- A Collection of American Flags - presented by Lee Scofield

July: 

6th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- The Hindenburg - presented by Hugh Finson

August:  no meeting this month

September: 

**11th** -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- Tour of Bryant Home and Bryant Cottage (note special date & time) - presented by Marilyn Ayers and Pat Hunter

This program will be presented at 2:00 P.M. in and about the two Historical sites of Bryant Cottage and the Bryant Home, nearby.

Bring lawn chairs for an afternoon of history, tours and lawn party.

October: 

5th -- Monthly Meeting and Program -- Robert Allerton: The Private Man and the Public Gifts - presented by Martha Burgin and Maureen Holtz

November: 

2nd -- ANNUAL Meeting and Program -- Potluck Dinner to be held at 6:00 pm at the FS Meeting Room at 417 W. Marion, Monticello, Illinois.

Special Program about the Stoddard Family in Piatt County - presented by Paul Stoddard.
