PIP Chapter 1 Notes from April 16, 2003 Meeting by Lisa Perkins Pointer #4779 On April 16, 2003, 23 members of Pointers in Person Chicago Chapter 1 began their quarterly meeting at 7:00 pm at the Suparossa Ristorante Italiano in Woodridge Illinois. The evening was slated as a book night. Lisa Perkins asked members to hold a discussion at their table related to the types of information that could be compiled into a "cheat sheet" that could be distributed to new researchers and also serve as a quick reference to seasoned researchers. After an informal pizza dinner, topics and items for the "cheat sheet" were discussed and noted. Next, POINT news was discussed including some highlights from the Spring 2003 issue of POINT. The new and improved Point Chapter One website surname list was announced as well as a request for members to consider hosting a discussion at future meetings. Up and coming genealogy and cultural events in the Chicagoland area were broadcast which included future meetings held by PIP Chapter 27 in Schaumburg, the Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois, and the Chicago Genealogy Society. Linda Davenport mentioned the club FIERI in the Chicago area and commented positively about a recent concert she attended that was hosted by them. Linda Messina Holda talked about an up and coming debate regarding dual citizenship in Italy held by the Sicilian American Cultural Association. Following was a discussion about the new availability of on-line records from the National Archives at www.archives.gov/aad. Jerry Farenga commented on his success with another website that allows for more custom searches of the ellis island database at www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellisshort.html. Through this site, Jerry was able to obtain a very good list of emmigrants from his Italian town of research by using this site. He commented that by searching for a town name, he was able to see the many spelling variations of the same surname that he might not have found using the Ellis Island site alone. Jerry also encouraged other members to place their surnames on as many websites as possible in order to find fellow researchers of the same family. He recently was contacted by a distant relative through one of his posts. Our book discussion was very informative as many members stood and spoke of their favorite books. A list of the books discussed can be found on our website at www.rootsweb.com/~ilpip1gs/Articles/favorite_books.htm. A raffle was held for all who brought books to share. A member donated two autographed books as prizes: They Came in Ships by Coletta and Ital Actors by Michael Bacarella. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm, and many stayed and mingled until about 9:45 pm. Our next meeting will be held on July 16, 2003. Respectfully Submitted, Lisa Perkins POINTer #4779
