I would like to locate the graves of two of my ancestors who died in Stephenson County when they were young children in the 1850's. Their names were William and Arthur PATTERSON sons of William and Elizabeth (Wissler) Patterson who lived in or near Freeport. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I'm looking for record of the birth of Henry W. GRUTSCH in Freeport Ill in the year 1869. His fathers name was Peter. I don't know much about this family, other than they may have came from Germany in the mid 1800's and settled in northern Ill. Some of the descendants moved to Wis and Henry W moved to Michigan in the late 1800's. Any info on this family would be of great help.

Janis Martin Mon, 08 Dec 1997 21:44:53

My gggrandfather and family came to Freeport IL some time around 1850 - 1860. His name is Gustave Auguste DOERR (DORR) and his wife is Helene Marie Therese. I believe that two children were born there: Joshephine Marie DOERR on 21 Nov 1856 and Isabelle Julia DOERR on 8 May 1860. I also think one or two children may have died there: Franklin Gaston DOERR on 21 Nov 1856 (yes, this conicides with his sisters birth date) and Charles Edward DOERR on 21 May 1853. I believe the family was of the protestant faith and came to IL from Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

I have no more than this to go on and regret that I don't know which township or if they lived in the city proper. He was a very learned man and his wife a seamstress. I would love to be able to verify these dates and learn about their life in IL before they came to MN.

Jo Ann Baxley Sat, 06 Dec 1997 16:31:08

I am looking for any information about Rev. Matthew PATTERSON. He wrote a biographical account of his father Rev. John Boyd PATTERSON for a Presbyterian article that I received from the Pres. Historical Society. He wrote this bio in 1872 from Freeport, Illinois. Any information about the Presbyterian Churches or Rev. Patterson would be appreciated and I will gladly share whatever I have about the PATTERSON family.

Seeking obituary for and descendants of Vernena DOW HOOKER, the daughter of George W. DOW and Elmina VANDERHEYDEN. She was born April 1892, probably in Pearl City, and died at Cedarville in October 1982. She was the wife of Glen HOOKER. Their daughter Betty Jean HOOKER was born 5 November 1919 and died 28 February 1989 in Cedarville. Before her death, Vernena had apparently collected a great deal of information regarding the DOW family of Stockton, Jo Daviess Co. Any "cousins" out there?

I am trying to find information on my Father's Mother's side. My grandmothers maiden name was FAWVER. From the family Bible it says that she was born on December 25, 1877 in Stephenson Co, Illinois to George Franklin and Harriet Moss Fawver. My grandmothers name was Bessie May Fawver.

Also, from old news clippings there was a Phillip Fawver who died at Freeport, Illinois sometime in October of 1914, from a automobile accident at Black Hawk Monument, and a Moses Fawver who died in Lancaster Township around the late 1890's or early 1900's, from a farming accident. I believe both of these gentlemen were brothers of George Franklin Fawver. I also, believe that George and Harriet where married in Freeport, Illinois, since Harriet was from Illinois. In one of the news clippings they had spelt the family name Fauver, which is a misspelling. They were members of the United Brethren Church. Moses Fawver widow Ella Fawver ran a boardinghouse in Rockford, per her obituary, but the family resided in Freeport. Phillip had thirteen (13) living children at the time of his death, and Moses had eleven (11).

Susan Fortenberry      Wed Aug 20 06:26:29 1997
I have found father candidates for my 3 g Grand father: George W. NOLAN, born 1823 (?Ohio?) which has IL connection. I think that George's father or uncle may be: Benet NOWLIN (aka Bennett and NOWLAN/NOLAN etc.). He was born 1795 in IL to parents: Lewis/Louis NOWLIN and Sarah WHITESIDE. Bennet married Nancy ROBESON, (ROBINSON/ROBERTSON?). He had brothers: James,Samuel,David, Hardin, and Lewis/Louis; sisters: Peggy, Elizabeth, Polly and Sarah. I found IL Land Records that show one or more Benet NOWLIN's purchased land in IL from 1816-1846, in Stephenson , Macoupin and Madison Co.s IL. A Bennet NOWLIN was said to be a miner (of what, I don't know...possibly lead or coal), and one of the first settlers of Green Co. WI where he arrived in ~1834. He purchased land in Dane, Green and Lafayette Co.s, WI untill the late 1840's. A Bennet NOLAN is rumored to have moved to Clayton Co. Iowa between 1850-1870, however , I have no proof of this. This is the thin evidence which leads me to hope that I am on the right track: The married sister of George W. NOLAN's future wife Drusilla BOWMAN, Jane Bowman WELLS {wife of Peter Garfield WELLS}, settled in Green Co.WI ~1838. Catherine M. NOLAN, (a daughter of George and Drusilla) b1846 IN -md C.C. CLEVELAND on 11Apr1865 in Boscobel, Grant Co. WISC.-d 1932 in Spokane, WASH. C. C. CLEVELAND bought land in Dane Co. WI. George W. NOLAN and family moved to Alamakee Co. IA in 1849. This county borders Clayton Co. IA. Any info on Bennet NOWLIN/NOWLAN/NOLAN/NOLAND etc. would be greatly appreciated. I live in Houston, TX. , home of the Clayton Library (Genealogy). For the online catalog, go to: Houston-Area Online Library Catalogs . I will gladly do reciprocal research for you. Happy Ancestor Hunting...........Susan Fortenberry sfsfvf@aol.com

I'm starting a research of my mothers family. To the best of my knowledge they were from Lena & Buena Vista , Illinois. My maternal grandfather was George H. HINTZ (born around 1880 - next stop is a call to the county seat to see if I can get a copy of his birth certificate). He married a woman named Mary CLAIR (date of marriage is in the 1902/1905 timeframe). Mary was also from the Lena / Buena Vista area. Note there are lots of variations in the way Hintz get's spelled (one may see HINZ, HINZE, etc.). My grandfather was always insistent that the proper spelling was Hintz, and I expect any of his descendents would have retained that spelling. In so far as I know, George was born in this country, though he may have had older siblings that were born in Germany. History on mom's side of the family is little known. Any info you could provide or any suggestions to make my research go more easily would be much appreciated.
