FAMILY BIBLE

This Bible was originally owned by Martha Louisa Jordan Green Balch. It was passed onto her youngest daughter, Allie Merle Balch Murphy, who then passed it onto her daughter, Carol Mildred Murphy Zeiger. It is now in the possession of Carol Jean Zeiger Fox Fellows, the daughter of Carol Murphy Zeiger. The original binding has worn away and the title page is gone. It was wrapped in brown wrapping paper by Allie Balch Murphy.

Martha Louisa Jordan, daughter of Zellwin (Bedick) Jordan and Nancy Hill Jordan, married William M. Green on November 9, 1876, in Norris City, White County, Illinois, "at the home of Mr. Gott." William Green was the minister of the Mount Oval Cumberland Church in Norris City, White County, Illinois (HISTORY OF WHITE COUNTY), at the time of their marriage. They had 13 children, of whom the first five or six were born in White County, Illinois.

After William Green's death on June 8, 1897, Martha Jordan Green married Allison McCord Balch in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, on March 19, 1900. Martha lived in Des Moines until her death on June 22, 1937. Her grand-children and their children and grand-children still live in the Des Moines area.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE:

"This certifies that Mr. W. M. Green and Miss Martha Jordan were solemnly united by me in the bonds of Holy Matrimony at the home of Mr. Gott on the Ninth day of November in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Six conformably to the Ordinance of God and the Laws of the State. In the presence of William Bogan, Isaac Lowell. Signed Mrs. Hellen Gott, Mrs. Mary Bogan."
