SMITH CEMETERY
previously known as
SMITH CHAPEL CEMETERY and also as the
TWELVE-CORNERED CHURCH CEMETERY
Based upon a previous inventory of the cemetery,
the following information was assembled in 1996-8
by David G. Smith,
Captain, USN (Ret.), a Smith descendant
The cemetery is located about 1.5 miles directly south of Monroe, between 100S and 200S on the West side of the road. A church with 12 corners once stood here but is long since gone. Built in 1866, the church was still standing in 1918. The 1879 plat of Monroe Township shows the land, 75.72 acres, as having belonged to Robert E. Smith (Jr.). The cemetery begins at the end of a long lane and extends to the abandoned railroad bed of the Cincinnati, Richmond and Fort Wayne Railroad. The existing stones are in two sections, the first section to the West, near the railroad bed, and the second to the East, starting at the end of the entrance lane. The two sections are separated by an open area that might have been the location of the Twelve Corner Church. However, that location is doubtful. A plat recorded by Robert E. Smith, Jr., on April 14, 1892, indicates that the plots in the cemetery extend from a point 17 ½ feet from the railroad right-of-way (West end) for a distance of 263 feet. At that point it joins the “west line of Old Cemetery.” The plots are in three rows of 18 and are numbered to 54. Each plot is 12 x 18 feet in size.
Although the church was apparently not erected until 1866, the tombstones existing in 1996 indicate that burials on the Smith land began as early as 1851. The last burial was that of James T. Elzy in 1951. The author’s research has also confirmed that many graves were unmarked and that others, from neglect or vandalism, are no longer marked.
This cemetery contains two tombstones indicating the individuals served in the War of 1812, however their service could not be verified. The author has verified with the National Archives that 12 others served in the Civil War. The following individuals buried in this cemetery served as election inspectors and township trustees for Monroe Township during the years indicated: Kalita Jacobs, 1846; Jonathan Ray, 1848; George W. Ray, 1851; M. Hendricks, 1857; Joseph R. Miller, 1864 & 1867; William Hendricks, 1866; George H. Martz, 1870; and Robert E. Smith, 1876.
The relationships of the various families is presented in the appendix and includes the author’s great-great-grandparents, John H. and Leah Smith, as well as the author’s great-great-great-grandparents, Robert and Sarah Smith.

Smith Cemetery
Plat as recorded in 1892 by Robert E. Smith, Jr.
The above drawing, as well as the following words, are recorded in the records of the Adams County Court House in Decatur, Indiana:
The above plat represents the Smith chapel now Cemetery as laid out and platted
by Robert E. Smith, Jr. The ground platted being a part of the North half
of the south west quarter of Section nine (9) in Township twenty six (26)
north range fourteen (14) east Adams County, Indiana. The north west corner
of Lot No. 18 being six (6) feet south of the half section line dividing the
N.E. ¼ and S.E. ¼4 of said Section 9 and 17 ¾ feet east of the right of way
of the Cincinnati Richmond and Fort Wayne railroad. The lots are numbered
from 1 to 54 inclusive and are each 12 by 18 feet except Lot 37 which is marked on the
plat. The width of Streets and walks are marked on the plat. The amount of
ground platted is 54/100 acres.
Robert E. Smith, Jr.
Personally appeared before me John W. Tyndall a County Surveyor in and for said County, this 14th day of April 1892 Robert E. Smith, Jr. and acknowledged the execution of the above plat as his free act and deed.
Smith Cemetery
As it appeared in 1996
In 1996, the tombstones in the Smith Cemetery extended, from the end of the entrance lane, back toward the abandoned railroad bed, a distance of almost 450 feet. The plat recorded by Robert E. Smith, Jr., in 1892, started at the Western end (by the railroad), running East for a distance of less than 300 feet. As shown below, the 1892 plat covers only the western half of the present cemetery:
Entrance Lane
Rail
Road
Bed
Thus, in 1996 there were many tombstones that were located a considerable distance to the east of the 1892 plat, extending from its eastern edge to the end of the entrance lane.
The below sketch provides a general location of those tombstones that existed, in 1996, within the boundary of the 1892 plat as recorded by Robert E. Smith, Jr. The HAHN tombstone, located in what the author has defined as Row 1, is in Lot 53 of the 1892 plat. That tombstone is located over 25 feet from the edge of the railroad bed. Many additional tombstones existed to the East of the 1892 plat. The specific location of individual tombstones is indicated on the following pages, with all reference to rows starting with the HAHN tombstone in Row 1, Lot 53, and distance measured from Row 1.
Twelve-Cornered Church South of Monroe
“Snow’s History of Adams County, Indiana,” 1907, states the following:
“Some of the most active members in securing the construction of the church at Monroe were Bazil Hendricks, William and Philip Hendricks, David Reefy and James Davey. These were assisted by contributions of labor, lumber and cash from the prominent business men of the town and community. This structure was repaired and remodeled in 1904 and made much more convenient and greatly improved in its outward appearance.”
The following is taken from the Standard History of Adams and Wells Counties, Indiana, 1918:
“During the few years previous to 1871, while Monroe as a village was very dormant, most of the church-going people in the neighborhood attended the Twelve-Cornered meeting house of the United Brethren, a mile and a half south of the settlement. The Methodists and the United Brethren had erected it jointly, in 1866, and it stood on the farm of Robert E. Smith, in section 9, Monroe Township. This quaint old house of worship is still standing and, although it may not be as picturesque as Hawthorne’s “House of Seven Gables,” it is far more interesting to the average man and woman of Adams County.”

LISTING of TOMBSTONES
The appearance of the Smith cemetery in 1996 indicated that vandals had taken their toll over the years. The pile of broken stones along the fence and the many unmarked depressions in the ground indicated the presence of a number of unmarked graves. As an example, the obituary of the author’s g-g-grandmother indicates her burial in the cemetery, yet a stone was not present.
The following is a listing of the existing (1996) tombstones,
with Row 1 starting at the railroad bed (West end) as all markers face west.
Along with the row identification is measurement showing the distance of each
row from the first row. A “ , ”
identifies each stone and a parenthetical number immediately following reflects
an approximation of the respective plot as shown on the 1892 survey The existing
stones in each row are listed from North to South. The italicized information
is from an earlier inventory as the stones were either missing or could not
be read in 1996. Military service of an individual is indicated by the following
flag:
