IN MEMORIAM - Pilot Achille "Archie" Vanhee (1909-2009)

Archie Vanhee was born on Sept. 15, 1909, in Jabbeke, Belgium, and died on May 3, 2009, of pneumonia in Hamilton. He was 99. He leaves his wife, Joanie, his children, Michel and Peter, five grandchildren and his sister Henrietta.  "Archie was short in stature but a giant in the aviation world," says his obit in the Globe and Mail* of May 20. Flamboyant, with a European flair acquired during his youth in Belgium, he stood out among other pilots. Mr. Vanhee flew more than 90 different types of aircraft, from the biplane Curtiss JN-4, a First World War aircraft, nicknamed Canuck, on which he learned to fly, to the prototype Boeing 707. He logged more than 25,000 flying hours and never had an accident.  When he was 15, a visit by a Canadian uncle changed his life. Intrigued by stories of opportunities in Canada, Archie persuaded his parents to let him go to work on his uncle's vegetable farm near Montreal. A year of farm work made him realize that he wanted to look at the sky, not the ground; and so he left to continue his education at College de Saint-Laurent after he persuaded the school to give him free board and tuition in exchange for sweeping floors and making beds.  He had his first flying lesson on May 7, 1928. While he slowly accumulated the required number of flying hours for a pilot's license, he became a licensed air engineer. In August, 1930, he qualified as a pilot and started flying for La Societe d'Aviation du Quebec. When the Second World War started, the Royal Canadian Air Force asked him to enlist because it needed his flying expertise. but, at 30, he was too old to fight, and he became an instructor, teaching in Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia. In 1943, he became commanding officer of 160 squadron, a Canso Coastal reconnaissance Unit. When the war ended, Mr. Vanhee returned to civilian life, moved to Vancouver and flew for Canadian Pacific Airlines.  In 1969, he relocated his family to Hamilton and joined White River Air Service as chief pilot on its norOntario route, flying Twin Otters. He took a leave in 1971 to spend two years with the Canadian International Development Agency training pilots in Senegal and Mali. When he returned to Canada, White river was taken over by Austin Airways.  At the retirement age of 65, Vanhee took on a new challenge as simulator instructor and occasional pilot for Austin Airways. He took a short leave each year to return to Africa to conduct follow-up training with his former students. The Deluce family, the new owners of Austin Airways, kept him on instead of hiring a younger man because "he had a reputation at the time and was well-known for his training," said Robert Deluce, now chief executive office of Porter Airlines. Vanhee left Austin Airways in 1983 when he retired at the age of 74.  *story excerpted from the obituary by Gay Abbate, sent to us by Mrs. Margaret Van Laeken in Langton, Ontario.

IN MEMORIAM - LEO LAMOTE, (photo)- Leo Lamote’s portrait by Jerry Lemanu in the champions’ gallery at the Cadieux Cafe.  The Belgian community and Belgian-American Floor Bowlers lost a good man last week. Leo Lamote passed away at the age of 87. Leo has been a member of many clubs, including the Floor Bowlers, feather Bowlers and Century Club, to name a few.  Leo joined the Floor bowlers in the early 70’s and bowled with us for over 20 years, until health issues forced him to retire. To many of us, Leo was “Bigger than Life” as he was a tall man with big voice. You always knew that Leo was in the room. He was friends with everyone. Many years ago the floor bowlers and Feather Bowlers sent a contingent to Michigan State University as part of a MSU festival. I was able to spend four days with Leo. When Leo was not demonstrating Feather Bowling or pigeon racing, he was in his room playing cards and drinking bear that he snuck into his room.  Up until his death, Leo played cards every Thursday afternoon with 50 or more of us old buffalos. Cards were his passion. Many, many years ago, the team of Remi Phlypo and Leo Lamote were the best euchre players around. No-one could beat them. Now these two are joined once again in heaven. I’m sure they are dealing the cards right now.  Leo, you will be missed by your many friends in the Belgian Community.  Maurice Vanneste.  Belgian-American Floor Bowlers.
