ZONNEBEKE - DOZA, the file of the former Augustinian abbey is kept in the file of the Grootseminarie of Brugge. It covers the period as from 1072 to the end of the 18th century and offers a treasure of information on the ancient regime in a region where good files are rare, due to wars during that time frame. 1,500 of the 2,000 files have been already studied and placed on the DOZA Internet site. http://www.kuleuven-kortrijk.be/doza/

Flemish DNA & Ancestry” – now available! By Guido Deboeck

Conventional genealogy relies on documents that can contain errors, may have been written to mislead, or could be partially destroyed.  Some relationships are never recorded. To go beyond the constraints of documents, genetic genealogy can be deployed. Through DNA testing paternal or maternal lineages can be disclosed.

Dr. Deboeck combines in this book conventional and genetic genealogy to reveal the history of three Flemish families over five centuries.  He describes the occupations of each of these families as well as the history of lace making, beer brewing, and immigration.

With concrete examples he illustrates the interpretation of DNA results and the uploading of those results to public databases. This book also includes an introduction to the Flanders-Flemish DNA project, the first analysis of actual Flemish DNA records and a summary of the deep ancestry of people with Flemish roots.

“Missionaries Among Miners, Migrants, & Blackfoot: The Van Tighem Brothers' Diaries, Alberta 1876-1917” - now available!

By Mary Eggermont-Molenaar and Paul Callens; University Of Calgary Press - ISBN 1-55238-189-7

This volume contains the diaries of the Vantighem brothers – Leonard, who served as a priest around 1900 in southern Alberta among miners and migrants, and Victor, who served for 43 years as a lay Brother among the Peigan and Blood Indians. The diaries are interspersed with letters from family and friends and letters and articles by contemporary bishops, fellow priests and Brothers. The Vantighem brothers’ diaries offer a fascinating glimpse of life during Alberta’s early settlement and development and play out against a backdrop of sometimes dramatic family and political affairs back in Belgium. The book contains valuable primary source material, most of which has been previously unpublished, and some of which has been translated from the Flemish-Dutch and French.

The “Carte du Feu” or “Vuurkaart” is a card given to all those who served in the Belgian military forces during the war, between  4 Aug 1914 and 11 Nov 1918, who served for at least 12 months (not necessarily consecutive) in the units listed (extracted from the 14 May 1932 Royal Decree, signed by the Minister of National Defense - DENS).  It could not be given posthumously.  The insignia “Croix du Feu” was given to the bearers of the Carte du feu, which served as affidavid.

http://www.familytreedna.com/(otbbk2voni5je555wh2exu55)/public/Flanders/index.aspx

This project creates a single place where through genetic genealogy Flemish ancestry can be studied. By bringing together DNA results from both Y-DNA (male) and mtDNA (female) genealogical lines of people whose origin is Flanders or are Flemish, we shall attempt to find the deep ancestry of Flemish people and identify the original haplotypes, haplogroups and most typical surnames.

Word from the President :

As we begin 2007, I would like to repeat words used by King Albert II in his Christmas address to the Belgian nation, as he reflected on peace and how to be peacemakers at home and abroad.  He said: “We know that the absence of conflict does not necessarily mean Peace.  Peace implies much more.  Peace requires that each of us develop an attitude of respect and goodwill towards our neighbor, whatever difference might exist between us.”

http://www.rtl.be/Site/Index.aspx?PageID=227&ArticleID=67753

Last year I was interviewed by our local newspaper and the subject quickly turned to the obvious questions of “How different is it here from Belgium?”

As I was discussing the differences between the countries but also the cultures and the people, I came to the conclusion that it might be better to focus on the similarities rather than the differences.

One of the things that link us here is Belgium and its culture.  It is our common heritage.

It is my wish that in 2007 you will find something in your Belgian background that makes you, uniquely.

As you discover the historical landscape where your ancestors walked I hope you will gain a better understanding of self and neighbor and actively engage in bringing Peace in your and your neighbors’ lives.
Come Visit us often and maybe even take it a step further and Join us!

Whatever you choose, may 2007 bring fruitful results to your research!

Happy New Year! And Happy Hunting!

Regine

Flag of the ACM (see BL #69) on display at the Army Museum in Brussels.  It was presented in Paris by Mrs Colaçao-Osario when this Division was formed.  It is interesting to note that only King Albert I had the right to present an emblem but an exception was made this time.  A second flag (ACM Brotherhood) was located recently on the Russian Orthodox church in Brussels, Belgium.  It needs to be restored.

The Belgian Flag Atop the Atomium

http://www.deredactie.be/cm/de.redactie.english/mediatheek_en/1.285690

Fri 11/04/08 - Thursday April 17th will mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 1958 Brussels World Fair.  Just like half a century ago, a flag pole, complete with the tricolor Belgian flag, now sits proudly at the top of the iconic monument.  Para commandos based at Marche-les-Dames (Namur province) were deployed to carry out the dangerous task of installing the flag pole and flag.  They were dropped off on top of the Atomium by a Sea King helicopter.
