YOUNG  WIFE  ENDS  LIFE  WITH  RIFLE

COMMITS ACT IN PRESENCE OF TWO CHILDREN, WHILE ANOTHER RUNS TO WARN FATHER.

BRAZIL, IND.,--- Mrs. Viola Hayes, wife of Lester Hayes, southeast of Harmony, committed suicide at the home late Saturday evening by shooting herself in the temple with a small 22 caliber rifle.

Mrs. Hayes had been a sufferer from nervous trouble for some time and was afflicted with spells of despondency.  She had remarked several times that she would be better off dead and threatened to kill herself, but the threats were not taken seriously.

While Mr. Hayes was out in the back yard chopping wood Saturday evening, the little ten year old daughter saw her mother take the rifle from a corner of the kitchen and watched her hunting through the drawers for a box of shells.  Becoming suspicious of her mother's actions, she started out of the house to warn her father, but her mother refused to allow her to leave the house.

After Mrs. Hayes had found the cartridges she told her daughter she could go out.  The child ran to her father and warned him and Mr. Hayes rushed to the house in an effort to prevent the act, but was to late.

When he reached the house he found the lifeless body of his wife lying on the floor with a bullet hole in the temple just above the left ear.  Two smaller children were in the house at the time the mother committed her rash act.

The deceased was 27 years old and is survived by the husband, two sons and a daughter, Levesta, William and Roy.  She is also survivied by the father, Alone Smith and a stepmother, of Knightsville, and a sister, Mrs. George William's, of Clinton.

The remains were taken to the home of her father at Knightsville yesterday where funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon.  Rev. Appleby officiating.  Interment in Croy Creek cemetery.

ROSS  HAYES,  65 ,  FOUND  DEAD ;  LAST  RITES  FRIDAY

Former  Clay  Worker  Is  Stricken  In  Quarters  Sometime  Wednesday

Funeral services for Ross Hayes, 65 year old east side odd job man who died Wednesday, will be held at the Lawson & Sons Funeral Home at 200 o'clock Friday afternoon.  The Rev. R. M. Boston, pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate and interment will be in Sampson Cemetery.

The former clay worker had recently returned to his bachelor quarters at the rear of the Turner Garage, 525 E. National Ave., and was thought to be making satisfactory recovery from a serious illness which had confined him to bed at the home of his sister for several days.  He had done some work during the past week and had been seen Tuesday evening.

Wednesday morning, J. A. " Jap " Turner noticed that Hayes' light was on, but later became concerned when his part-time employee failed to make his appearance.  Shortly after noon, Mr. Turner saw that the light was no longer burning and decided to investigate.  The position in which the lifeless body was found indicated that Hayes had died instantly as he was preparing his lunch.  He had apparently been dead about three hours.

" Snakey " as he was known to his friends, was a son of the late George W., and Sarah Ann ( Brown ) Hayes, and was born in Parke County, Oct. 27, 1887.  When he was about 18 years old, the family located in this community where he had since resided.  During most of the next 25 years he was employed by the former Clay Products Company.  Since that time he had found a ready market for his services as a general " handy-man" and his seasonal employment included spading gardens in the spring, cutting grass in the summer, raking leaves in the fall, and firing furnaces in the winter.  However, he had been forced to curtail these activities during recent months because of failing health.

He is survived by one brother, Claude Hayes of Brazil R. R. 1, Brazil, and one sister, Mrs. Dewey Hadley, this city, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Lawson and Sons funeral Home any time.

  CLAUDE  HAYES ,  72 ,  REPUBLICAN  LEADER ,  DIES

Claude L. Hayes, Sr. ,72 years old, a former miner and a long time resident of R. R. 1 in the northwest part of Brazil, died unexpectedly at 1250 o'clock Monday afternoon a few minutes after he had been taken to the Clay County Hospital for treatment of a chronic cardiac condition.

A son of the late George W. and Sarah Ann Brown Hayes, he was born in Dick Johnson township on February 21, 1885, and had spent his entire life in this community.  After working as a miner for 20 years or more, he was employed for several years as a shovel operator for the former Brazil Sand & Gravel Company, and later served as custodian of the Public Library.  Prior to his retirement in June, 1956, he had worked for the State Highway Department for several years.

Interested in Community affairs, Mr. Hayes was an active worker in the Republican party and for many years had been Precinct Committeeman of Precinct 12, which encircles Brazil.  Although he had been under medical care, his condition was though not to be critical and he had topped a tree at his home last Monday.  It was believed that this exertion brought about his fatal illness.

Surviving are four daughters and three sons; Mrs. John Lucas of Indianapolis; Mrs. William Gentry of Anderson; Claude L. Jr., and Arthur Hayes, proprietors of the Hayes Bros. Food Market of this city; Miss Margaret Hayes, Brazil; Mrs. Robert La Haise of Greensburg; and Richard Hayes of Ellwood City, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Dewey Hadley, Brazil; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
