Chapter to Meet May 7

The Ohio Valley Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, will meet this Saturday, May 7, at 10:00 a.m. President J.D. Strouth has requested for all those attending, please bring your 2005 and 2006 appointment calendars to the meeting. The meeting will be held in the second floor meeting room of Willard Library, corner of Division and First Avenue in Evansville. John West will be presenting the program, "Flags Over America." He will have over 70 flags to display, and describe, including the 27 Official U.S. Flags and several Colonial Flags. Visitors are welcome! Lunch to follow Saturday's meeting at Grandy's, corner of First and Diamond avenues, for those interested.

Awards Banquet in Evansville

The annual awards banquet was held at Sirloin Stockade in Evansville on March 19. Attendance was excellent, and the following awards were presented:

  • Don Counts was awarded the War Service Medal and the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal.
  • Hal Kasper was awarded the Service to Veterans Medal
  • J.D. Strouth was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal
  • John West was awarded the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal
  • Edna Kasper was awarded the Daughters of Liberty Medal
  • Becky West was awarded the Bronze Color Guard Medal and the Martha Washington Medal
  • Ruth Hall was awarded the Bronze Color Guard Medal

The chapter awarded 17 Color Guard Certificates to individuals who have participated in chapter "sponsored" Color Guard events. Compatriot Legler was given the "T. Rex RULES" Dinosaur matching card game in recognition of his contribution to the chapter and looking ahead to his election as Indiana Society State SAR President (now official).

Other Chapter News

Bob Hall and John West (uniformed) presented the JROTC Medal to Cadet Jessica Smith at the JROTC Annual Awards Banquet at Central High School, and Don Counts and John West (uniformed) presented the JROTC Medal to Cadet Joshua Meyer at the JROTC Annual Awards Banquet at Harrison High School. Wil Teague, Bob Hall, Ed Hitchcock, and John West participated in the State Meeting presentation of the Colors and retiring the Colors. Among the events were a memorial service presentation was given by State Chaplain J.D. Strouth, and a musket firing salute honoring deceased members. Bob Hall and John West were recognized with the presentation of the SAR Color Guard Medals.

May 28-29 is the Vincennes Rendezvous, where the SAR will have a recruiting booth. July 1-4 State Color Guard will be at Conner Prairie in Indianapolis along with the Indianapolis Philharmonic. Contact: Wil Teague or see state webpage for information on both events.

INSSAR Annual Meeting Honors Local Chapter Members

Congratulations are in order for several members of Ohio Valley Chapter for accomplishments at the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Society. Chapter member Ed Hitchcock was awarded the Meritorious Service medal, and chapter Registrar Bob Hall was awarded the Patriot Medal. Bob and chapter Historian John West were awarded a Color Guard medal. Several chapter members were elected to state positions as follows: Rex Legler as State President, Ed Hitchcock as State Genealogist, J.D. Strouth as State Chaplain and Americanism Committee Chairman, John West as South District Director, and John Van Zandt as Hoosier Patriot Editor. Our chapter was awarded the Golden Chapter Award for medium-sized chapters. Also, Rachel Fulton from Evansville was the state winner of the Knight Essay Contest. Congratulations to all!
