ASHLEY WIDOW, 88 YEARS OF AGE, DIES IN AUBURN


A resident of Ashley nearly all of her lifetime, Mrs. Zidania Grate, 88, widow of the late George Grate, died in the Dr. Bonnell M. Souder hospital in Auburn Wednesday morning. Mrs. Grate, who had been in good health previously, died of pneumonia. She had been visiting in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Day of Ashley, when she was stricken.

Mrs. Grate was born on Oct. 14, 1864, the daughter of the late Isaiah and Sarah Cox Smith.

The body was removed to the Swank funeral home at Ashley for burial preparations and will remain there for funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Herbert Schuckers, pastor of the Methodist church at Ashley, of which Mrs. Grate was a member, will officiate at the services and burial will be in Cedar Lake cemetery.

Surviving besides the daughter, are another daughter, Mrs. Pearl Oberlin of Hamilton; two sons, Jay Grear of Ashley and Ralston Grear of Ossian; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren, and four brothers, Ira and Jerry Mortorff of Ashley, Orin Mortorff of Stroh and Charles Mortorff of Kendallville.
