DeKalb County Indiana Obituary

The DeKalb Democrat, February 3, 1865, Friday

Contributed by Roselyn Wells

A DISTRESSING AND FATAL ACCIDENT.--Last Saturday evening a Mrs. Mutzfelt, the wife of a man who was drafted last fall in Butler township, in this county, went to the barn yard to feed and take care of some stock and for some purpose got under a portion of a straw stack which was eaten into by the stock, and was crushed to death, by the falling of a portion of the straw which had become frozen together.  The face and head being badly mangled.  Within half an hour after the accident could have happened, she was found, but life was extinct.  Five little, helpless children are by this accident thrown upon the cold charities of the world.  People should exercise more care, and not permit such dangerous places to be created on their farms, which hazard the life of themselves and their stock.
