Phillip Rex Watson was born on the Allen County Line in his Grandfather William Watson's residence on 5/27/31, He is the youngest son of Harry & Gertrude (Kinney) Watson, who with his brothers, Ervin and Mack, resided in DeKalb County until his marriage to the former Anna May McCoy, daughter of Wilbert A and Clara (Buehrer) McCoy.

Anna was born in Swan Township at her parents farm on 5/8/29 the eldest of four children, there following her a sister, Dorothy and twin boys, Maurice and Marion McCoy. She had lived all her life in Noble County.

Rex and Ann were married 4/15/54 at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church by her cousin, Rev. Daniel C. McCoy, and took up residence just north of Avilla on State Road 3, where they have lived ever since.

They are parents of two sons; Jeffrey Phillip Watson born 4/7/59 and James Michael Watson born 12/31/60, both now married, with Jeffrey and his wife, the former Leslie Wilson still living in Avilla and James and his wife, the former Diana Eleff of Hobart,, now living in Wichita, Ks.

Rex became associated with construction work shortly after their marriage, working for several contractors until 1980, when he went into business for himself under the name of Rex's Plumbing and Heating.

During this time he became a Licensed Plumbing Contractor under a new state law the legistature passed to protect the public.

He is a member of the Avilla Lions Club and the Hopewell Presbyterian Church and enjoys water skiing, swimming, canoeing, and overnight camping.

Anna M. Watson graduated from Avilla High School in April 1946, and took a clerical job in Kendallville. While rooming in town and working, she attended night school at I.U. Ft. Wayne studing accounting and related subjects. She worked in several accounting jobs prior to taking a job with Glenn E. Thrapp and John C. Thrapp in 1965, where she continues to work as a Tax Accountant-Legal Assistant.

She has been active in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church and its Missionary Society; is a member of the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Mission of the Lakes and a former member of the board of directors of the Noble county Training Center. Her hobbies are pen Pal letters, reading, crocheting, sewing and working with the elderly--especially those with no family.


Avilla--Rex Watson, 68 of Avilla, died at 6:30 a.m. today (Mon. June 21, 1999) in his home. He had been ill with cancer.

He was born in Allen County, May 27, 1931, to Harry & Gertrude (Kinney) Watson. On April 11, 1954, in Hopewell United Presbyterian Church in Avilla, he married Anna M. McCoy. She survives, Mr. Watson had been a plumbing contractor and owned Rex's Plumbing for 17 yrs. Prior to that he worked for Jordon Construction and Paul R. Becker Construction in Ligonier. He was a member of Hopewell United Presbyterian Church and
Avilla Lions club.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Jeffrey P. Watson of Avilla, and James M. Watson of Wichita, Kan; two grandson, Eric Watson and Nicholas Watson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin E. Watson, and Mack L. Watson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hopewell United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ken Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Brazzell Funeral Home, Avilla, and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Preferred memorials are to the Lions Cancer Fund, McCray Home Health & Hospice, Noble county Council on Aging or to Hopewell United Presbyterian Church.
