Vera Watson, 93, a
resident at The Oaks Center in Columbia City,
died at 7:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1,
2004 at The Oaks.
Born on Jan. 18, 1911, in
Bluffton, she was a daughter of
Virgie and Jennie (Christman) Bender. She descends from pioneer
families of Wells
John and Barbara (Mast) Bender came to Wells County
about 1855 from Berks county, Pa. Benders continued to stay in Wells
Vera's grandfather, Jonathan Bender, had a dairy and milk delivery in
The Frederick Christman family owned a bakery in Bluffton about 1865,
grandfather, George Christman was a well-known farmer west of Bluffton.
Her marriage to Elroy
Watson took place on Dec. 8, 1934 in Liberty Center.
They were farmers and always
lived in Wells county until 1995 after the death of Elroy, she went to
a daughter, Patricia, in Albion.
A member of Liberty Center baptist
Church, she worked
cook at Southern Wells Community Schools between 1960's and 1975. She
active in the Farm Bureau in Jefferson, Liberty
Survivors include the
daughter, Patricia (Robert Dyson of
albion, five grandchildren: 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great
and a sister, Marjorie Souder, formally of DeKalb Co., now with her son
In addition to her
parents and husband, she was preceded in
death by a brother, Verl C. Bender and a siter, Mary Alice Stout.
A private family service
will be conducted Thursday, with
Pastor Bud Abrams of First Baptist Church of Bluffton, officiating.
Memorials may be made to
the Diabetic Association or the
Wells-Blackford County Genealogy Society.
