The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
This cemetery is located in the S.E. 1/4 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section #26 Range 8 E. Twp. 25 N. on 500 E. just north of 200 N. Right next to the now abandoned church which bears the same name.
Just within the last few years the beautiful Italianate church has been abandoned for a more modern and energy efficient structure about a mile and half north of the older one. The cemetery has also been abandoned. The new United Methodist Church is now located at the crossroads in Hanfield, on 500 E. and 350 N. The old bell from the belfry of the old church is now mounted outside the new church within the confines of their sign in front of the new church. The old church is falling in terrible disrepair and will soon be another lost piece of Grant County's finest architecture. The cemetery, although now abandoned, is still well cared for. I did note quite a few stones are down and almost totally buried. The last burial to take place in this cemetery appears to be Henry L. Circle. He was buried in 1974 along side his wife, daughter and 2 infant sons.
The following narrative was taken from "Whitson's History of Grant County" - 1914.
"In 1853 Fletcher (Methodist Episcopal) was built on the farm of Benjamin Marsh in the southeast part of the township. The services on dedication were held in 1854 by O.V. Lemon. The first trustees were Dow Marsh, Andrew Riggle and Jonathan Bevard. The first pastor was Reverend Robinson. Conspicuous among the charter members were Jesse Marsh and wife. Benjamin Marsh was class leader for many years. A pretty church with modern appointments now ornaments the spot where the old church formerly stood."
