PARK CEMETERY

	The Fairmount Park Cemetery Association was formed April 6, 1889
and the first ground was owned April 11, 1889.  It was bought from Ruth 
Elliott and James N. Elliott.  A sinking fund was created and is maintained 
by the sale of lots and by gifts.  This fund maintains and protects this 75
or 80 acres as a suitable ground for the burial of the dead.  There are at 
this time over 3500 persons buried here.
	The above information was taken from the abstract of this land.  The 
records on the following pages are copied by Mrs. Tony Payne from the 
records kept by the Association.  They contain information asked for at the 
time of burial and are not copied from the stones.  The information is 
correct in all particulars.
	The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
	This is Dec. 1994, and the amount of graves at this cemetery has more 
than doubled since then.  I have decided to copy this cemetery as it is, just
in case I don't get the chance to read it.  The mimeograph copies of the 
work of the DAR are in such bad condition, much of the reading, has to be 
looked at through a magnifying glass.  This is no fault of the DAR, what 
they had to use in the 1940's was state of the art back then.  Mimeograph 
copies were usually blue ink and when copies are made of this work much of 
the print is lost.  I can remember as a child, making copies with a 
mimeograph machine.  Then the teachers would make the entire class go over 
the sheets and fill in what would be missing or illegible at the time.  With 
our new computers, and state of the art copiers now, we are able to get much 
better work.  And hopefully 50 years from now people won't be struggling to 
read what we have done.  I have corrected any typo's I found, and anything I 
was not sure of, I went to the cemetery and checked for a stone.  In most 
cases what is recorded in the records of a cemetery is the burial dates and 
not the actual date of death.  This one reads as the actual date of death, 
but beware, it is always better to check out the death record or the actual 
stone to make sure.
	What has been recorded here is burials up to and including the year 
1900.  Many of these people are recorded as having died before this cemetery 
was established in 1889.  We must assume that they were moved in from other 
cemeteries after the Park was established.  If the record shows the place of 
birth I put it in.  But keep in mind most gravestones do not tell the place 
of birth.
