Marion County Genealogy Projects

The Genealogical Society of Marion County currently has the following projects underway, for which volunteers are appreciated.

1.         Wayne Township Cemetery Project

The Society is reading and indexing all of the cemeteries in Wayne Township and will compile these readings in a publication, tentatively scheduled for release in summer 2007. Volunteers are needed for data entry, and proofreading. Please contact the Society Directors for additional details.

2.         Family Quest Journal

The Society publishes a quarterly journal of Marion County genealogical data and requires an ongoing supply of small and medium sized articles for publication. Staff volunteers would develop materials for inclusion in the Journal as their time permits.

3.         Indy Lineages Newsletter

The Society publishes a bi-monthly newsletter of topical articles of interest to members and other genealogists. Staff volunteers would develop and submit items as their time permits. Contact Indy Lineages Editor Fred Engelking.

Prospective Marion County Genealogy Projects

There are several ways in which interested volunteers can contribute greatly to the development of Marion County genealogy. We have listed several prospective projects below for your consideration. The Society may undertake any or all of them contingent upon the recruiting of volunteers. If anyone has a different project to suggest that they would like to do, please contact a Society Director.

A.        Church History Acquisition Coordinator

A volunteer will contact all of the county churches of one denomination to determine if a church history has been prepared, and/or if older church records exist, and attempt to obtain a copy of such for the GSMC Library. We need one volunteer for Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Other denominations, for a total of six positions. Work at your convenience and at your own pace.

B.        Business History Acquisition Coordinator

A volunteer will contact older established businesses in the county to determine if any type of history has been produced and to attempt to obtain a copy for the GSMC Library. Work at your own pace and times. Good opportunity to work with a friend.

C.        School District Acquisition Coordinator

A volunteer will contact one school district in the county and will attempt to acquire a district history book, if one has been produced, or attempt to acquire older school yearbooks, or copies of graduation lists, when available. Approximately 10 school districts are available. Work at your own pace and times.

D.         Funeral Home Acquisition Coordinator

A volunteer will contact older established funeral homes in the county and attempt to acquire copies of burial data in their possession. Work at your own pace and times. Good opportunity to work with a friend.

E.         Indexing Library Assistant

Volunteers will prepare surname indexes for un-indexed volumes in the GSMC Library. You may work at home, if you prefer. Some indexes may be printed in the Society journal.
