This cemetery was restored in the summer of 2009 by volunteers led by Jessica
and Dan Felix. In just two days a group of about 50 volunteers cleaned,
repaired and reset almost all of the 100 gravestones in the cemetery! The
volunteers included geocachers led by Jeff Curtis, 4-H members led by Sandy
Shonegg, Mill Creek Junior Optimists and many neighbors and community members.
Larry Tippin from the Putnam County INPCRP once again lended a hand.
Thank you to everyone who worked to make this the most successful
project so far!
This cemetery has gone through many stages of neglect. It has not been
consistently mowed in the past. Large trees have fallen and there has
been some previous vandalism. Some stones have been repaired using
incorrect methods. All but three stones had to be reset, including large
monoliths. Many stones were badly broken. However, now all the
stones have all been correctly cleaned, repaired and reset and mowing has
been taken over by the Knights of Columbus. Concerned community members
will ensure that the cemetery stays in good condition.
