GrantÕs family.  ItÕs open to the public I think.  If you continue straight down the hill you come right up against the Ohio River.  There is a small park there now.)

2.  Member of the 7th OH Cavalry, The River Regiment, during civil war.

 

3.  This regiment was organized October 3, 1862, under Col. Israel Garrard. It operated in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina, and in July, 1864, joined Sherman's Atlanta campaign, fighting almost daily. After the fall of that city it moved north and met the enemy at Franklin and Nashville under Thomas, then followed in the pursuit of Hood across the Tennessee River. In March 1865, the Seventh Cavalry joined Wilson's raid, fighting its way to Selma, Ala., and while pursuing the enemy to Andersonville, the news of Lee's surrender was recieved. The Seventh was mustered out July 4, 1865.

4. John W. Armacost was captured and imprisoned at Andersonville but was released after a very short stay (about 3 weeks) in some sort of prisoner exchange.

JohnÕs mother died at child birth or soon after.  He was being cared for  by some people north of Cincinnati and he was being abused.  Issac, learning of this, walked to Cincinnati and carried John all the way home.

3.  Point Pleasant might have been named for its pleasant location on a point of land on the Ohio River. First known as Pointopolis, the community was laid out in 1813 by Joseph Jackson. This unincorporated community in Monroe Township is the birthplace of President Ulysses Grant. It is on U.S. 52 about five miles upstream from New Richmond and about a mile downstream from Moscow.

2.  In 1909 he bought 80 acres of land near McBride, MI.  He paid $3000.  He cleared the land and planted crops.  The cleared  roots were used for fencing.  They were placed with the roots reaching toward the sky.  During the witers the snow would settle in the nooks and crannies and get packed down and hard.  The children walked to school on top of the fences.

 

Alva  planted a large orchard of peaches, cherries, pears, plums and apples which soon began producing.  He and Libbie raised cucumbers for the Heinz Pickle Co.  In 1918 the family returned to IN.

 

3.  January 27, 1947

Alva L. Cole, age 67, well know retired farmer of Orange Township died suddenly of a heart attack Monday morning at 10 o'clock in his home at Gowdy in which he and his wife had just moved Friday from Moscow.

 

Mr. Cole had spent many years in the Orange vicinity, with the exception of a few years when he lived North of Rushville, moving back to near Moscow about 7 years ago.

 

He was a member of the Moscow Christian church.  His survivors include the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Armacost Cole, two sons, Lloyd Cole of near Moscow, Austin Cole of Union City and a daughter Mrs. Bertha Mount of Crawfordsville.  He is also survived by five grandchildren and three brothers, Arthur of Lewisville, Walter of Bentonville, Horace of near Milton. 

 

Funeral services will be held in the Moscow Church with burial in the Moscow Cemetery.

Union City - Austin A. Cole, Florham Park, NJ, formerly of Union City, died Thursday (October 18, 1990)  in Livingston, NJ after a long illiness.

 

He was a native of New Castle and was a former principal at   Union City High School.  From 1963-78 he was director of admissions for the College of Liberal Arts at Drew University, Madison, NJ.  He  was a Navy  veteran of World War II.  He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity and the Navajo Fraternity at Ball State, The Florham park United Methodist Church, and the Florham Park Senior Citizens.

 

Survivors include his wife, martha Chattin Cole; two daughters, Beverly Cole Boston of Esperance, NY, and Barbara Cole Notch of Scotia, NY; one brother, Lloyd Cole of Milroy; one sister, Bertha Mount of Amherst, Mass.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

 

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. (Indiana time) Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Union City, with the Rev. Lester Taylor officiating.  Burial will be in Union City Cemetery.  Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to  8 p.m Tuesday at the Fraze & Brooks Funeral Home.

Verner M. Mount, 77, of 2307 indianapolis Road, (Crawfordsville, IN) died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Culver Hospital.

 

Mr. Mount had served 14 years as Montgomery Circuit Court baliff. He founded the Crawfordsville Burial Vault co. in 1933 and continued as its owner and operator for 36 years.

 

He was past president and 43-year member of Crawfordsville Lions club and had a perfect attendance record for 43 years.  He was a member of Crawfordsville Masonic Lodge and First Christian Church.  He was a graduate of Noblesville high School and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

 

Born July 28, 1907, at Scottsburg, he was a son of James and Anna Murphy Mount.  He was married to Bertha Cole in 1935.  She survives.

 

Also surviving are two sons, Stanley C. of Madison, Wisc. and Dr. Mark Mount of Amherst, Mass; two brothers, Mark of Westfield, N.J. and Dr. M.S. Mount of Bloomington; two sisters, Ethel Mount of Noblesville and Mrs. Bessie Ruth Campbell of Moneta, VA; and four grandchildren.

 

Two sisters are deceased.

 

Services are scheduled at 11 a.m Saturday in Powers Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Brigman officiating.  Friends may call at the funeral home 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Friday.  The family requests memorials to be made at the funeral home to Lions Club Cancer Control Board.

Verner M. Mount, 77, a former Hamilton County resident, died Wednesday, May 1, 1985 in Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville.

 

He was born June 28, 1908 in Scottsburg.  He attended Noblesville Schools and graduated fro Noblesville High School.  He later moved to Crawfordsville where he had lived for the past 40 years.

 

Survivors are his wife, Bertha Mount, Crawfordsville;  two sons, Stanley Mount, Madison, Wisconsin;  Mark Mount, Amherst, Massachusetts; two sisters, Ethel Mount, Noblesville; Bessie Ruth Campbell, Moneta, Virginia;  two brothers, Mathias S. Mount, D. d., Bloomfield;  Mark Mount, Westfield, New Jersey and four grandchildren.

 

Services were held Saturday, May 4, 1985 at Powers Funeral Home in Crawfordsville.  Burial was in Scottsburg.  (NOT)
