V. HOWARD HOFFER is one of Muncie=E2=80=99s active young business men, associated with the Hoffer Food Market, an important wholesale and retail establishment that was founded forty years or more ago by his father. His father, Edward A. Hoffer, was born and reared in Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of Andrew Hoffer. Andrew Hoffer came from Germany and was a pioneer live stock dealer at Fort Wayne. He is buried in the Fort Wayne Cemetery and his widow still lives in that city. Edward A. Hoffer about 1888 moved to Muncie and established a meat market. That is a business that has been steadily developed to larger proportions under his able management. Since about 1925 a grocery department has also been conducted, and it is a firm that enjoys well-merited popularity in the city and also does a large business wholesale among surrounding to wns. Mr. Edward A. Hoffer married Martha V. Harrington, who was born and reared in Muncie and attended public schools there. She is an active member of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church and was formerly a member of several women's clubs. These parents had seven children, four of whom died very young. The living children are V. Howard; Charles Edward, of New York City; and James Richard, a student in the University of Michigan. V. Howard Hoffer was born at Muncie, June 7,1896. He attended public schools, and after high school was a student in the Muncie Normal Institute, now the Ball State Teachers College. When he left school he entered the service of Armour & Company and spent two and a half years with that corporation=E2=80=99s South American branches. This was valuable business training and also gave him a broader outlook on life in general. After returning home he joined his father and has done his part toward the building up of this very successful business. Mr. Hoffer is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, being affiliated with Delaware Lodge No. 46, A. F. and A. M., Muncie Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Muncie Council, R. and S. M., is a member of the Indianapolis Consistory and Murat Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is affiliated with Muncie Lodge No. 245, B. P. 0. Elks, is a past president of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Advertising Club, Muncie Merchants Association and has always shown a disposition to get out and help in worthy civic movements.He is a Republican and a member of the High Street Methodist Church. Mr. Hoffer married at Muncie, May 20, 1920, Miss Charline Ingersoll, of that city, daughter of Charles and Minnie (Moore) Ingersoll. Her father is also associated with the Hoffer food market and has been with that establishment for a number of years. Mrs. Hoffer attended the grade and high schools of Muncie, is a member of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church and the Business and Professional Woman=E2=80=99s Club. To their marriage were born five children, one of whom died in infancy. The four living children are Robert M. and Martha Sue, both of whom are students in the public schools, Edward A.III and Cynthia Ann.
