In May of 1824,
the first courthouse was constructed at a cost of $274.00 by a builder
named George Barnard. In 1831, a new courthouse was ordered to be constructed.
The builder was Nathan Crawford who bid the job at $5, 315.00 to be paid
in installments over the following 5 years. For the design of the building,
Robert Murphey was paid $2.50. Upon completion, the commissioner's decided
that the work on the building was inferior and only paid Mr. Crawfore
$4500.00. This second courthouse was destroyed by fire on Feb. 13, 1864.
In 1869 a brick courthouse was built on the east side of the courthouse
square. This is the front half of the present courthouse. In April of 1905,
Patrick H. McCormack and Co. completed the new addition, or the weat half
of the present courthouse at a cost of $44,000.00.
