L.G. Cartwright, 502 South 18th Street, will celebrate his 91st birthday on Friday, September 17th.
If Mr. Cartwright's entire 91 years have been marked with the delightful sense of humor which he has today, he must really have had a 'barrel of fun'.
This nonagenarian was born in 1863 in Delaware County and was educated at the Center School No. 3.
When he grew to young manhood, Mr. Cartwright went to Albany to work for the Hoosier Manufacturing Company, moving on to New Castle when the factory located here in 1900.
Mr. Cartwright and his wife moved to their present home on 18th Street about 40 yeas ago and he loves the place with its wide veranda and easy chair, where he spends these warm fall days with his trusty pipe.
However, old rockin' chair hasn't got Mr. Cartwright, as the song goes. He is a busy man in his retirement. He takes long walks out in the country, talks a lot with his neighbors and friends and spends many hours reading, especially his Bible.
Mr. Cartwright's wife, Caroline, is 87 years of age and she and her husband are boon companions. She laughs readily at his witticisms and this is probably their formula for a long and very happy marriage.
When asked if he goes down town much, Mr. Cartwright said, "Yes, sir, I've got to go real soon, too, and pay my taxes."
Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright have three children living, Mrs. Mary Lena Smith of New Castle, Mrs. Martha Lingenfelter of Dublin and Mrs. Audrey Watts of Detroit, Michigan. They also have nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
