Marshall Homer Conner, 87, whose nickname of "Doc" was more familiar than his correct name, retired Courier-Times linotype operator, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Herbert Lee Conner in Indianapolis. He suffered a heart attack early Friday evening and death came early Sunday morning.
For 66 years, Doc Conner worked at the printing business in New Castle. It was on January 2, 1885 he went to work on the New Castle Courier for his brother-in-law, the late William H. Elliott. He learned to set type by hand and when the linotype made this method obsolete, he mastered the new machine and continued with The Courier and later with The Courier-Times, putting in all told 66 years in the printing business. He retired January 1, 1952.
Mr. Conner was the son of Levi and Lucinda Conner and was born on a farm near the old Sugar Grove school. The family moved to New Castle when the son was four years old. The family home was on Race street between 11th and 12th Sts. Miss Emma Wayman conducted a private school and it was from her he obtained his early education.
He was married May 16, 1893 to Julia Moore, daughter of Cornelius and Elizabeth Moore and they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1943. Mrs. Conner passed away in 1950.
Mr. Conner was a life-long member of the First Methodist Church and was a member of the Masonic lodge, having been presented a 50-year membership pin in 1946.
One of Mr. Conner's earlier hobbies was his membership in the old Rescue Fire Company. He would often recall instances of this company's fire fighting abilities and one of the highlights he related was that concerning the Burr Building fire fought in a temperature of 15 below zero.
Surviving are four children, William Elliott Conner, Azusa, Cal., Herbert Lee Conner, Indianapolis, Mrs. Elizabeth Conner Ramsey and Mrs. Thelma Lu Cooper, New Castle. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Mrs. Stephen Bronson of Lafayette, Joe Ramsey of San Diego, Cal, and Bill and Tommy Conner of Indianapolis and Mary Jule Cooper and David and Daniel Day; and two great grandchildren, Julia Joyce and David Bronson of Lafayette.
