Mrs. Marietta Kem, Pianist, Composer, Dies Unexpectedly

Mrs. Marietta Kem, 77, 638 S. 18th St., died unexpectedly of a heart attack Friday afternoon at Henry County Hospital where she had been taken for observation.

Mrs. Kem was a well known composer and teacher of piano and the science of harmony. She was a frequent performer in programs and recitals throughout Indiana. Several of her pupils attained prominence musically.

Mrs. Kem was also known for her poetry, having published several books of poems. Others have been broadcast and appeared in magazines and newspapers.

An affiliate of the Riddick Piano Co. in Indianapolis for the past 25 years, she was the area representative for the Baldwin Piano Co.

She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church where she served as pianist and choir director for many years. The present adult choir bears her name.

Mrs. Kem was a member of the Allied Arts Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, the Poetry Club, and Order of Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Indiana Composers Assn.

Her husband, Frank, preceded her in death in 1926; a son, Russell, Indianapolis, died in May of 1957.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Miss Linda Sue Kem of Indianapolis and a sister, Mrs. O.G. Concannon of Madison, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kem will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Davis-Couden Funeral Home by Rev. R.E. Pavy. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Sunday.
