One man was electrocuted and three others were shocked
Saturday afternoon when an antenna fall across a power
line in a freak mishap at Hall's DX Service Station
on US 35 at Webster.
Dead on arrival at Reid Memorial Hospital was Theodore
Max Parkhurst, 23, R.R 2. David Parkhurst, 26, 4705
National Road West, was in
fair condition at the hospital Saturday night with
burns on his ears, face, and upper back.
Treated for shock was Keith Kendall 15, Webster Road.
He was in critical condition.
Tom Hall 15, son of the station operator, J.D. Hall
was not hospitalized although he was knocked down.
Sheriff's deputies and witnesses said the four had
emptied a steel tire cabinet and were moving it when
tragedy struck.
Attached from the cabinet to a citizens band radio
antenna rising above the station was a metal guywire,
the witnesses said. When the cabinet was moved, the
guywire was pulled taut and caused the flimsy antenna
pole to buckle.
The antenna fell across a public service Indiana (PSI)
power line carrying 7,200 volts of electricity.
It exploded and knocked me down said Tom Hall of the
surge of electricity. The others also were knocked
away from the cabinet. Electricity in Webster was off
for more than an hour after the mishap, until line
crews could be summoned to pull the antenna off the
wire and make repairs.
Ater's Ambulance service dispatched the emergency
unit to transport the injured to the hospital.
