Mrs. Walter Runyan Victim Near Decatur
Plans for a New Castle family reunion in celebration of Mother's Day ended in tragedy early today near Decatur with the traffic death of a mother to be honored, and serious injuries to her son-in-law and granddaughter.
Dead is Mrs. May (Walter B.) Runyan, 84, of 415 S. 21st St. The injured are C.J. Baker, 42, 909 S. 20th st., and his 5-year-old daughter, Margaret.
Also killed in the two-car crash was Anthony L. Laker, 22, of Rt. 2 Monroeville.
The accident occurred at 6:25 a.m. on a cruve on U.S. 224 one mile east of Decatur. Laker was westbound, driving alone, on his way to work.
According to investigating authorities, the eastbound Baker car was four feet into the wrong lane due either to passing another car or taking the curve too wide.
Both Die Instantly in U.S. 224 Collision
The cars hit head-on and both victims apparently died instantly.
Mrs. Runyan died of a crushed crest and multiple bone fractures; Laker, of a crushed chest and skull fracture.
Baker suffered severe injuries of his entire left side, including fractured ribs, fractured shoulder and fractured left leg. His daughter sustained compound fractures of both legs and internal injuries.
Both are in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where their conditions are termed serious.
The Bakers and Mrs. Runyan were enroute to their cottage on Lake James where they were to spend the Mother's Day weekend.
The Runyans had gone regularly each year just before Mother's Day to their Lake James Cottage where they usually remained until September. Celebration of Mother's Day at the cottage is a regular annual family event.
Husband Waiting for Wife and Relatives
Mrs. Runyan's husband, Walter, was awaiting them at the cottage and Mrs. Baker was scheduled to join them later. The Bakers and Mrs. Runyan left New Castle early this morning.
Mrs. Runyan's body was taken to the Zwick Funeral Home in Decatur.
A lifelong resident of New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Martin L. and Susan Powell, well known early residents.
Surviving also are three daughters, Mrs. E.E. Farlow of Chicago, Dr. Marie Edith Runyan of Elmira, N.Y., and Mrs. Susan (C.J.) Baker of New Castle; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Helen Baker of Richmond and two brothers, Arthur Powell of Walcutt, Ind., and Dr. Archie Powell of Pasadena, Calif.
The body will be brought to the Main and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
