Veteran Richard D. Beck, 80, Vallonia, passed away at 7 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at his residence.

After retiring from the military, Mr. Beck retired from Cummins and had also worked at the Vallonia Tree Nursery. He entered the Army Air Force, now known as the U.S. Air Force, in 1947, retiring in 1970 with the rank of master sergeant. He was stationed in many parts of the world and served his country in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his military service he was honored with many awards. He and his family were very proud of his eight bronze service stars. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Seymour. He lived in Jackson County all his life.

Born November 19, 1929, in Brownstown, he was the son of John R. Beck and Audrey O. Brewer Beck Thompson, both of whom preceded him in death. On June 16, 1979, in Vallonia, he married Priscilla Ann Wheeler Beck, who survives.

Others survivors include children, Janet (Ed) Benoit, Harker Heights, Texas; stepdaughters, Rebbeca Kirts, Vallonia, and Jacqueline (Neal) Snowden, Seymour; sister, Patricia Poff, Vallonia; aunts, Elizabeth Beck, Junction City, Kan., and Bonnie Gilbert, Scottsburg; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ricky Beck and David Beck; three sisters, Wanda Beck, Megan Holloway and Emma Mathis; and one brother, Jerry Beck.

The Rev. Jerry Wheeler will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Vallonia. Burial will take place at Vallonia Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
