Virginia L. Deardorff, 90, of Seymour and formerly of Brazil, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Schneck Medical Center, Seymour.
Mrs. Deardorff enjoyed crocheting, needlework, puzzles and traveling. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with family. She had attended First United Methodist Church since moving to Seymour. She attended Vinegar Hill School and Brazil High School.
Born September 28, 1919, in Clay County, she was the daughter of Fred and Verna Heck, both of whom preceded her in death. On October 21, 1936, she married Elmer E. Deardorff. Together they owned and operated the family farm. She helped on the farm whenever she was needed. She and Elmer were married for more than 65 years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jim Aker, Seymour; three grandchildren, Kevin (Darla) Aker, Columbus, Kellie (Eddie) Yon, Greencastle, and Kara Abraham, Seymour; five great-grandchildren, Colin Aker, Michaela Aker, Kaylin Yon, Zane Yon and Briley Abraham; one sister, Vaunda Johnson, Terre Haute; three brothers, Oscar Heck, Florida, Leo (Marge) Heck, Sevierville, Tennessee, and Loyd (Maryann) Heck, Lebanon; a sister-in-law, Ruby Heck, Winamac; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Heck and Ray Heck, and a sister, Maxine Stanton.
The Rev. Steve Cherry will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday at French Funeral Home, Brazil. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and again Thursday prior to services at the funeral home.
