Veteran John Michael Dowdell, 63, of Norman died at 12:49 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Dowdell was a paramedic, a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1966 to 1969. He retired in 2002 from the U.S. Air Force after 28 years of military service.

He belonged to Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, Carr Township Fire Department, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Native American Veterans Association, Native American Indian Council, Brown County Emergency Medical Association and was a member of SAR (Search and Rescue).

Born October 26, 1946, he was the son of Michael Francis Dowdell and Helen Gorton. On October 25, 1997, at Nashville, Ind., he married Cherie Lynn Hansome, who survives.

Other survivors include a son, Russell (Sharon) Martin, Australia; two daughters, Jamie (Whittredge) Tincher, Norman, and Jenny (Michael) Villarreal, Columbus; and six grandchildren, Matthew Whittredge, Daniel D. Tincer, Ashton Villarreal, Monica Martin, Trevor Martin and Sarah Martin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Donna Harvey; and a stepmother, Marguerite Dowdell.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Brownstown. A Native American Smudge and Drum Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Air Force out of Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday.
