  Jay County native HERBERT L. BURDG, 76, 806 W. Water St., Berne, died Wednesday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital in Fort Wayne.  He had been ill since Jan. 1.  He was assistant postmaster at Berne before retirement.

  Born Feb. 28, 1897, his parents were Nathan and Ida (Stowll) (sic).  On Oct. 15, 1921, he was married to Lillian Kauffman, who survives.

   A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the American Legion Posts at Berne and Decatur and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He belonged to the Free & Accepted Masons in Geneva, Adams County Shrine and Fort Wayne Scottish Rite.  He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne.
  Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Wolfe, Decatur;  one son, Richard G. Burdg, Liberty Center;  one sister, Mrs. Rex (Helen) Maitlen, Leigh Acres, Fla.;  11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Yager Funeral Home in Berne with Dr. Homer W. Achor officiating.   Interment will follow in MRE Cemetery.  Callers will be received at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday
