  JOSEPH H. GAUNT, 87, 310 E. Arch St. Portland, a Jay County teacher for 49 years, died Sunday morning at the Jay County Hospital following a brief illness.
He taught most of the years in Portland City Schools.   Gaunt was graduated from Marion Normal College and Ball State University.
  Born Sept. 29, 1881, in Knox township, Jay Co., he was the son of David and Sophronia (Hartman) Gaunt.   On March 10, 1906 he was married to Inez Horn, who survives.   He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church.   He also belonged to the K of P Lodge and was a 50 year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

 Surviving besides his wife Inez, are three sons,  Eugene, Dayton;  Harold, Springfield, Pa.;  and Ernest, Traverse City, Mich.;  two brothers, Orlan, Dunkirk and Myron Gaunt, Anderson;  a sister Miss Edith Gaunt, Dunkirk;  7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Baird Freeman Funeral Home, Rev. Paul Stevenson officiating.   Burial will follow in Green Park Cemetery.   Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 o'clock tonight.
