First Jay County Woman Funeral Director Dies

Dunkirk - Tyrah S. Jones, 73, 114 E. Washington St., died at the Caylor-Nickel Hospital in Bluffton Monday following an extended illness.

She was a member of the Priscilla Club, Redkey, and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was the first woman funeral director and embalmer in Jay County, graduating from the Cincinnati School of Embalming in 1921. 

She is survived by her husband, Howard W. Jones, Dunkirk; one son, William H. Jones, Dunkirk; three grandchildren, Mrs. Jay (Tyrah) Jerles, Redkey, Donald Jones, Dunkirk, and Miss Kayla Jones, Dunkirk; one sister, Treva Lukenbill, Indianapolis; and one brother, Chester Steed, Redkey.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Dunkirk Jones Mortuary with Rev. Muriel Olson officiating.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Redkey.

Friends may call at Jones Mortuary from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
