She will be remembered as a
independent and straight-talking
professional nurse who cared for
all those around her throughout
her entire life.
She was born Sept. 29, 1929, in
Cleveland to Lucille and Arthur
Schurdell. She graduated from
Indiana University School of
Nursing in 1950 and began her
40-year nursing career as a regis-
Her first job was at Indianapolis
Veterans Hospital. She then
worked as a homemaker, raising
her children in Louisville, Ky.
Olympia, Wash., and Valparaiso.
She returned to Indianapolis in
1967 and began a 25-year career at
Methodist Hospital. She retired from
Methodist as a surgical head nurse
in 1992. She moved to Charlotte in
2007 to be with her daughter.
She is survived by a brother, Ted
Schurdell of Fort Myers, Fla.;
three children, Jim (Shana) Bow-
man of Greenwood, Linda (Doug)
Hamilton of Charlotte and Andy
Bowman of Orlando, Fla., five
grandchildren, Sarah (Ken)
Ackermann, Laura (Joel) Pontius,
Andrew Bowman, Leslie Hamilton
and Brad Hamilton; and one great-
grandchild, Lucas Ackermann.
A memorial service was con-
ducted Jan. 26 in Charlotte, with
Richard Runge of Ascension
Lutheran Church presiding.
