Residency Certificates

The La Porte County (IN) Genealogical Society is proud to offer four categories of residency certificates. Documented information to an ancestor residing in La Porte County (IN) during the various time periods shown below is required to qualify.

on or before 31 December 1840*
during the years 1841 through 1860
during the years 1861 through 1880
1861 through 30 April 1865

The primary purposes of the Residency Certificate program are:

  1. To identify and honor the memory of the earliest pioneers and veterans of La Porte County, Indiana, and
  2. To show the proved pioneerís and veteranís lasting mark on the county they helped develop and serve by honoring their descendants.

Applications must include documented proof of descent and a brief family history. These will be preserved by the genealogical society for reference by other genealogists and will be a historical record for future generations.

Application fee for members of the La Porte County (IN) Genealogical Society is $20.00; non-members, $25.00. The fee includes a one-year membership in the Society and entitles the applicant to the quarterly newsletter (The Door).

Submission of applications with documentation will be accepted starting June 1 with a deadline for receipt of July 31 each year. Certificates will be issued at the meeting of the Society at its regular meeting in September. Certificates will be mailed to recipients who cannot attend the awarding in person.
