RECORD OF INSANE - MARSHALL COUNTY

Editors note: In looking for material to print in this publication, a concentrated effort is made to find obscure information not easily found by the person searching for roots in Marshall County. That is the purpose for printing the following item, not to offend.

In the late 1800's, mental facilities were having the same problems we face today in that space for people needing treatment was not always available. Just inside the front cover of a large book recording admissions from Marshall County are two letters from the Indiana Hospital for the Insane. The book can be found in the Marshall County Historical Museum and the letters read:

Indianapolis, Ind. Jany 7th 1880
Clerk of Marshall Co.
Sir:
According to request I will state that the quota of your county is 12. Number in hospital is 8--1 woman and 3 men can be received pursuant act 1852 Jany 15 Decb'r 10-29 inclusive.
Very respy
Jos. G. Rogers
Supt.

Indianapolis, May 3rd 1881
Clerk of Marshall Circuit Court,
Dear Sir:
The Indiana Hospital for the Insane is filled again to the full extent its recently doubled capacity, and, under the operation of existing laws, all vacancies occasioned by discharges or deaths must be filled from the class known as acute cases, as defined by law, of less than a year's duration, rather than from the chronic class, --those of more than a year's duration. Experience proves that the number of vacancies so caused is not equal to the number of applications made for the admission of recent cases. Therefore it has been recently necessary to reject all cases of more than a year's duration, and to discharge a small number each month of the chronic inmates to the counties to which they belong to make room for the influx of recent and presumably curable cases.

I send you this information with the hope that you will discourage, as far as may be, the holding of inquests in cases of more than a year's duration, since such cannot be accepted until greater capacity is secured, and, moreover, the expense in the aggregate, over the State, is very considerable, and under the circumstances entirely useless.
I am, very respectfully,
Joseph G. Rogers,
Superintendent

Evidence of the cooperation between counties is seen in a loose paper inserted in the book from Joseph H. Taylor, Clerk of Kosciusko County. Mr. Taylor certifies in the letter that "on the 21st day of November AD1879, Simon Barnhart, then a resident of Harrison Township said county and State was adjudged insane and on proper application made, he was admitted as a patient of Indiana Hospital on the 26th day of November, 1879." He further goes on to state that his office has received no record of discharge as of the 3rd day of November 1883.

CARSON, Pres't Board of Trustees. (Box 674)

EDITOR'S NOTE: References earlier in the book were of the state hospital in Indianapolis while later entries concerned the "Northern Indiana or "Long Cliff" hospital at Logansport. I found it interesting, while reading through this record book, how many times admission to the hospital was refused or postponed because the hospital was either full or had no vacancies in a specific department. Notations recording proceedings between the hospitals and the county left the impression that persons who were considered curable were often given priority for admission. A couple of entries indicated that persons deemed incurable by the state hospital were simply returned to the county for care.
