Genealogical Research Policy

Please be advised that the museum charges $10.00 per hour, one hour minimum, payable in advance, for genealogical research done by our staff. One-half hour of preliminary research is provided free of charge to make certain further research is merited. The charge includes a search of the museum library resources only for persons with Marshall County history, envelope, postage and a reasonable number of photocopies.
To aid research, it is important to include known dates; locations where the person(s) about whom you are inquiring might have lived (town, township, etc.); name of husband if inquiring about a female; and any other information which might be of help. This printable Research Request Form can be used. Please use a separate form for each person if searching for more than one ancestor.
Our research facility includes an extensive surname file of Marshall County people; all county newspapers on microfilm, many indexed for deaths, etc.; all census records for Marshall County; manuscripts and published family histories; hundreds of entries located in vertical files by surname; birth, death and marriage indexes (for limited time periods); cemetery inscriptions (for limited time periods); county plat maps; some circuit court records including estate papers, divorces, guardianships, some naturalizations, etc.
Help is available at no charge to those using the museum library in person. Call to be certain the library will be staffed before making travel plans. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The museum library closes each weekday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for lunch.
