Early Martin County Schools In 1824 a law was enacted that required every able-bodied man, age 21 or older, who resided in a school district, to work one day each week on the construction of a school building or pay 37 1/2 cents for each day he was absent. This was the beginning of Martin County's public schools. These were some of Martin County's earliest school superintendents. Thomas M. Clark 1873 - 75William C. Hays 1875 - 77Thomas F.
