Obituary of Anthony Lemon

He was born in Albion Sept. 7, 1862 to Dr. Stabsbury W. Lemon, a pioneer physician of Noble county, and Harriet Wheeler Lemon. He was an only son but had two sisters, Harriet Lemon Hall, now of New-Ark, Ohio and Lillian Baughman, deceased.

Mr. Lemon spent several years of early life with a surveying party on the Great Lakes. This party was under the leadership of his uncle, Eben S. Wheeler, a Govt. engineer, who did all the surveying for  the canal locks at the Soo.

He returned to Albion, from the Great Lakes and became a teaming contractor for the building of the present Noble Co. court house, and furnished the gravel used I the construction. He also selected the shade trees around the court house and supervised their planting.  Every tree grew.

On November 16, 1886 he was united in marriage to Emma E. Baughman. Three children were born to them, Clara Harriet Emerick, Kendallville, Chas. D. Lemon and Frank Stansbury Lemon both of near Albion.

For 47 years he was in partnership with Chas. Beck, conduction the ice business in Albion, At the same time and for the years since he has engaged in farming and horse buying. He was always a saddle horse enthusiast and was one of the oldest riders in the county. He was a member of the Saddle Club and headed the parade at their annual affair only last summer.

The six grandsons acted as pallbearers at the funeral, April 22, 1951.  Mrs. Lemon died Nov. 15, 1945.

              (New Era May 2, 1951)

(In a conversion, one day, Mr. Lemon remarked that as a mere lad, the first time he saw Miss Baughman, his future wife, he was so impressed with her beauty and personalty that he remarked, “I’m going to marry her.”  And he did.)
